Parliamentary Secretary for Agriculture Fisheries and Forestry Senator Judith Troeth launched the National Dryland Salinity Program's new Managing Dryland Salinity in Australia Toolkit in Melbourne today.
'The toolkit comprises three manuals and an interactive CD-ROM,' Senator Troeth said. 'Farmers, catchment management authorities and others engaged in fighting salinity now have easy access to essential information in an easy-to-understand format that can be applied to individual circumstances.'
Since 1993, Australia's National Dryland Salinity Program has invested over $25m in more than 50 major research projects involving more than 300 scientists. This research has generated a wealth of knowledge about the causes, extent, impacts, costs and management of dryland salinity in Australia.
In the last year, more than 400 research reports including the NDSP work have been synthesised into three major new information resources:
These have been developed with extensive involvement of their target audiences at farm, catchment and policy levels respectively.
To complement and enhance the useability of the new resources, an interactive CD-ROM Managing Dryland Salinity in Australia , has also been produced. It combines all three manuals with full internal cross-referencing, external links via the World-wide Web to results of key NDSP projects, the National Land and Water Resources Audit, and a wide range of other salinity information resources and tools. The CD also usesstate of the art, user-friendly search facilities providingthe world's best synthesis of the knowledge base for managing salinity.
