Sustainable Industries

The story of Australian agriculture is filled with challenges, opportunities and innovations.

Right now, Australian agriculture is facing many new challenges, and needs reliable information to chart the best way forward.

This is where Sustainable Industries can play a part - we initiate and manage research and extension projects to boost on-farm productivity, profitability and sustainability.

Our research focuses on:

  • Water resources management and water use efficiency;
  • Sustainable irrigation management and technology;
  • Climate risk - variability and climate change;
  • Soil health and salinity;
  • Farming systems and feedbase management;
  • Whole-farm economics and social influences; and
  • Biodiversity, native vegetation and riparian management.

Thousands of farmers are directly involved in local trials and demonstration sites, ensuring the research results and changes

on-farm can be applied in the region.

Our programs are strengthened through collaborations with other rural Research and Development Corporations, farming and Landcare groups, industry, regional organisations, Farmers' Federations, and research providers such as universities and CSIRO.

To convert research results into on-ground farming practices, we invest in extension, social research and communication support for farmers to learn about, test and apply research and trial results.

Our strategies work on many fronts, from employing local coordinators and organising community events, through to running media campaigns and producing publications, to policy briefings and collaborating with local, state and federal government agencies.

The Sustainable Primary Industries brochure  provides an overview of the research programs.
